Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific discipline that has proven to be the most effective intervention for individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilities. ABA is not a recipe that can be applied the same way to each child. Rather, it is a set of procedures that guide our teaching and allow us to assess and shape the specific behaviors of each individual.
Verbal Behavior (VB) is the behavioral analysis of language which focuses on the function of language not just the form (Skinner, 1957). We look at language as a behavior that can be directly taught and increased through reinforcement. Tools such as The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS), (Sundberg and Partington, 1997) are used to identify specific language objectives and to provide a curriculum and skills tracking system. At CTAC, we are strongly influenced by the applied and experimental behavioral research of functional assessment, motivational variables, augmentative communication and the analysis of verbal behavior.
